In our family we have been eating more organic produce and minimizing any processed foods. Have you looked at the price of organic food lately? Even my local grocery store Publix has their own brand of “organics” that carry a higher price than their regular store brand. I have found a few ways to keep the costs of organic foods down so I thought I would take a moment and share them with you here:
1. Start your own garden. Growing your own produce is the surest way to guarantee that your family’s foods are free from any pesticides or chemicals. After all, the only way anything can be added to the foods from your own garden is by your own hands. We have a garden in our backyard and the kids have greatly enjoyed the gardening experience. It has allowed them the opportunity to try foods they wouldn’t have been as eager to try otherwise.
2. Shop at the local farmer’s market. Our city has a nice little market on Saturday morning where a plethora of organic items can be found. The items are much less expensive than in the grocery store and definitely are more fresh.
3. Frequent stores that cater to the organic foods movement. Sure, you will probably find some organically grown foods at your traditional grocery store; however, they are often not at the best price available (unless you can find them on sale). Alternatively an organic foods supermarket will offer a wider selection of products and a regular rotation of sales on products.
4. Clip coupons. Like any other part of your food expenses, expenses for organic foods can be greatly reduced with the use of coupons. Be sure to check out your favorite products’ websites to see if there are any coupons you can download.
5. Learn to preserve your purchases and the food from your garden. Canning or freezing the excess foods you’ve procured. You’ll be able to take advantage of sale prices by buying larger amounts of your favorite items and saving them for future use.
What are the best ways you’ve found to save money on organic produce?
